Karel Jill Ortiz, MD, FAAD, MBA

Dr. Ortiz is a licensed physician and surgeon in the state of New Mexico, Board Certified as a Diplomat of the American Board of Dermatology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. Dr. Ortiz is dedicated to caring for the skin of patients of all ages and has a special interest in skin cancer treatment and prevention. She has shared her knowledge and expertise with other physicians through various educational presentations regarding common diseases of the skin and skin cancers, including several scientific presentations at national conferences.

Dr. Ortiz graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of New Mexico with a degree in biology and psychology. She went on to attend the University of New Mexico medical school and, again, graduated at the top of her class. She received extensive training in dermatology at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona, where she completed her residency. After residency, she returned to New Mexico and practices dermatology with a special emphasis on skin cancer treatment and prevention.

Dr. Ortiz is a member of the Mayo Clinic O’Leary Society, which is dedicated to professionalism, integrity, and patient care. She is an active member of the American Academy of Dermatology. Through continuing medical education, she is constantly updating her knowledge of the skin and its care.


Michaela (Haney) Jacobs, MD, FAAD

Dr. Michaela (Haney) Jacobs is a licensed physician and surgeon, a board certified dermatologist and a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, Society of Pediatric Dermatology, and American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.  She is also active in the local New Mexico Dermatological Society.

She graduated with honors from the University of San Diego, then returned home to attend the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. She graduated first in her class, was honored with the Faculty Excellence award and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society as a junior member. Dr. Jacobs completed her Internship in Internal Medicine in 2010 and her Dermatology Residency in 2013.

She specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of skin disorders in patients of all ages, with a particular interest in skin cancer, surgery, and pediatric dermatology.

Outside of work, Dr. Jacobs enjoys reading, being outdoors (with sunscreen on), running, playing soccer and spending time with her family.

Candice Martinez, PA-C

Candice Jane Martinez, a board certified Physician Assistant, received her Master’s degree from the University of New Mexico’s Physician Assistant Program. A native Texan, Candice earned her undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University while competing for the school’s cross country and track teams.

Her passion for Dermatology started at a young age with her own battle with teenage acne. Even now as an adult she still struggles with acne and can empathize with her patients and how it impacts their lives. She began her work in Dermatology as a medical assistant at Chapel Hill Dermatology in North Carolina. As a Physician Assistant, she practiced in the fields of Gynecologic Oncology as well as Internal Medicine with an emphasis in adolescent medicine before returning to her true calling of Dermatology. Candice’s focus has always been patient care and communication. She loves being part of the Rio Grande Dermatology team and thoroughly enjoys providing her patients with excellent care and treatment.

In Candice’s spare time she enjoys running, cooking, traveling, and spending time with her husband.

Kelley Nelson, PA-C

Kelley Nelson is a board certified Physician Assistant who has been practicing in the field of dermatology since 2008. She graduated with honors from New Mexico State University with a BS in Chemical Engineering prior to obtaining her Master’s degree and graduating first in her class from the University of New Mexico Physician Assistant Program.

Kelley has the experience and knowledge to treat a wide variety of skin problems and diseases, including skin cancer, acne, eczema, and psoriasis. She provides thorough skin cancer screening, biopsies and surgical excisions. Kelley is passionate about her patients and is dedicated to caring for the skin of patients of all ages. She has a special interest in skin cancer treatment and prevention.

Outside of work she enjoys taking dance classes, yoga, hiking, and spending time with her family and two children.
